Sime, you might have noticed a heavy Wendell Berry influence in there!

To the second (anonymous) Simon...thanks for your comment, this is a really good question I reckon. It's partly that dynamic I was trying to help people get beyond...whether we call it addiction or labradorism, it's the belief that we're necessarily dependent on what is wrong. Whether we get past this will depend largely on whether we consider ourselves able to...and I think we can, we just haven't yet because we're mostly in denial of what it's going to cost us (and what it's already cost us).

I can't say I'm all that sure of the way forward either but I think permaculture gives us some good principles to begin that way forward. That and I'm beginning to wonder if some kind of 12 step program might actually genuinely help, at least for some people. Thanks for stopping by.Simon Moylehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11104899282395776572noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-25276233.post-56930382320115030772009-02-08T10:11:00.000+11:002009-02-08T10:11:00.000+11:00Thanks for the article. I support the key message....however I have always thought we are more like labradors than addicts.... if there is a bowl of food (or air con button or other convenience) we'll take it. How do we achieve a new discipline to reduce consumption and think beyond immediate gratification? My lab can't do it....and neither can I. Millions of years of evolution collide with resource intense consumer capitalism. The results are very ugly and I am not sure of the way forward.

Regards,

Another SimonAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-25276233.post-169285796578607312009-02-07T09:01:00.000+11:002009-02-07T09:01:00.000+11:00Way to go Simon!
